Bills. Children are expensive; there's no way around it. But, no one told me how expensive! Now that it's been two months since our son was born and the medical bills are rolling in. It's pretty ridiculous how much it all costs. No wonder doctors are wealthy. Last month I got a bill for almost $400 and that was just for delivery. This month we just got a bill for anesthesia - $150. Ok, that stinks after just paying delivery but then add on $400 more for services for my OB/GYN! Oh wait...it gets better...if insurance decides NOT to cover when our son was in the Special Care Nursery for a week then we will owe close to $2000! This is for someone that has insurance! I thought teachers had fairly good insurance?. Apparently not. Yes, I looked at the overall cost of these things and it adds up to something like $70,000 for both delivery and the SCN before insurance - thank goodness we do have insurance. BUT WHAT?! When it's all said and done I will have paid up to a little over $3,000. Who has that kind of money? - especially during the holidays?. No one.
I also just got notice stating that all Ohio schools will be cut federal funding next year by at least $8 million what does this mean for the financial forecast of our school district? Jobs will be cut. So far education has been one of the lucky ones in this recession. It's pretty difficult to justify cutting so much money from the children of our future; especially when the United States is doing so poorly in academic testing compared to other nations. But, that's it. The government has cut everywhere else and it was only a matter of time before education felt the effects of a recession as well. Just like everyone else I hope and pray that the jobs that are cut do not include me. My hope is that since Special Education is required by law, that my job is more of a necessity than someone else's - isn't that an awful way to think? I hate it.
